		<title>3rd Div Mens &#8211; Druids 5 Edson 43</title>
<description>Druids came out with a strong line up for the game against the League leaders Edson and showed fire and determination at the start of the game, as they took on the Edson pack by running the ball right at them. A number of ground gainers by the forwards showed they were ready to play and things looked promising.

Daryl MacKinnon was on fire with hard nosed runs and relentless tackling. Tana gained yards as he dropped his shoulder into whoever tried to stop him.  Cliff and Gerald ran hard and tackled well.Vick was a force in the lineout and displayed some strong running..

It looked like the forwards could take control of the game, but the Edson teamwork and experience began to show as the half neared its end.  Edson backs took advantage  of  two times that our backs were caught creeping inwards leaving the outsides open for their wingers to run. Then a quick penalty and the big Edson #8 crashed over just before half time.   Yet  the Druids still looked as if they could  salvage the game.

The second half  however was not the same.  From the half time restart we allowed the opposition to break down the middle and they scored. Then as the half progressed we started missing tackles and the score built up. Low leg tackling switched to high tackling

and Edson took advantage of this.

Nick Heffel  scored a nice try with a break form the 20 meter line . Dylan Thompson playing in his first game of the season was a tackling machine and Quintin from full back ran us out of problems with determined running. Travis Griffin was a workhorse throughout the game solidifying the forwards.

Inexperience in our positional play started to show allowing Edson to use their backs well. The Druids players showed heart all game long but were beaten by a team that has been together for a few years,  and knows its game. They pass the ball around well.

1st star  Darryl MacKinnon  who was a dynamo while he was on.

2nd star  Vick Dhaliwal who ran hard and was solid in lineouts

3rd star Travis Griffin  who set a solid platform in the scrum and gave it  all until subbing off near the finish.

Druids 1sts won  31-24 vs Calgary Irish   and the 2nds lost a very good game to Leduc.

Next Saturday   Druids 1sts vs the Saints in Calgary.  Druids 2nds vs St Albert at St Albert (1pm). 3rds next game is Wednesday June 16th vs NorWesters at Ellerslie ( 7 pm)

Our 3rd Div players have suggested that we really need to commit ourselves to practising on Tuesdays and Thursdays to develop team positioning and to work on certain skills. This will be a consideration in  team selection for the game on the 16th.

Try: Nick Heffel.

Coming off a solid win last week the Druids were determined to continue their winning ways against the always strong Calgary Irish. The team spent a fair bit of time working on their pattern of attack during the week and the practice paid off within minutes of the kick off as a hard running Duncan Morris finished off a nice series of phases with a crashing run right through the middle under the posts. The Druids added to their lead soon after with a well struck penalty kick by Snowy. The Irish responded with a score of their own and were determined to make a game of things. The new comer Josh Papale restored the lead for the Druids touching down his first of two trys on the day. The conversion by the sure footed Snowy put the Druids up by seven points. That try was followed up by another solid try by our captain Marty which was again converted by Snowy. Our fourteen point lead held up for a while but instead of scoring and putting the game out of reach a defensive laps and strong run down the wing by Irish number nine allowed the Irish back in the game. The play seemed to go back and forth after that with a long passage of play without a score. The scoring drought was eventually ended much to the delight of the vocal home town fans when Michael lowered the boom on an Irish player with an impressive tackle right in front of the stands. The Irish player  desperate to   keep the play alive coughed up  the ball in contact and the alert Josh Papale stepped up to grab the gift  and scampered some thirty five meters down the sidelines for his second score of the day.  Instead of closing the deal at this point we again let the Irish back into the game allowing them a rather weak try off a mid field  ruck where we did not have sufficient numbers on one side of the ruck.

Overall the Druids played a solid game and were well deserving of the win. Again we were solid in the lineouts. Our scrumaging was improved and at times looked solid however inconsistency at other times had us going backwards. This was a game that we could have put away early but we let the Irish off the hook by failing to finish off movements that had us on their goal line on three different occasions.

The player of the game for the Irish was the ever illusive and hard running number nine Ian Shoults.

The man of the match for the Druids as selected by the Irish was new comer Josh Papale who scored two trys on the day and had some strong attacking runs that got us moving forward. Honorable mention goes out to Martin who again played solid. The game at times got very physical and the presence of the powerful Konrad Augustson who after a year off is making more and more of an impact each game. Ian Rousseau was particularly strong in the scrums and played well in contact. Snowy again played well and his sure footed kicking 4/4 on conversions and one penalty kick in the end were the difference in a game that was closer than maybe it should have been.

Tries: Duncan Morris, Josh Papale (2), Martin Clancy.
Cons: Adam Gowing (4)
Pen: Adam Gowing
